26 Mar, 2026Strategic positioning and market opportunity
Aims to be a leading US-based producer of battery-grade natural graphite, strategically located in Alabama near major EV and battery manufacturing hubs in the U.S. Battery Corridor.
Facilities are positioned to serve the growing demand for graphite in lithium-ion batteries, with the U.S. seeking to reduce reliance on imports, especially from China, which currently supplies 93% of uncoated spherical graphite.
Graphite is critical for battery applications, composing about 50% of a lithium-ion battery by weight, with electric vehicles containing significant amounts.
Project development and operational progress
Kellyton Graphite Plant is under construction, with $124 million of the expected $245 million development cost already spent.
Phase I targets 12,500 mtpa of battery-grade graphite, fully secured by offtake agreements with Stellantis and SK On; Phase II aims to expand capacity to 50,000 mtpa.
Commercial milling and shaping units are installed and operational, with qualification lines delivering samples to customers.
Construction milestones include completion of earthworks, foundations, and vertical construction, with commercial milling and shaping expected to be complete by July 2025.
Resource base and vertical integration
The Coosa Graphite Deposit, located 30 miles from the Kellyton Plant, is the largest graphite deposit in the contiguous U.S., with 42,000 acres of mineral rights and 2.3 million short tons of natural graphite identified.
Initial assessments indicate a 22-year mine life, producing 99,000 short tons per year of flotation concentrate at 95% Cg.
Coosa is expected to become the primary feedstock for the Kellyton Plant, supporting plans for complete vertical integration.
